Elf: the musical
Produced by Cypress Lakes High School
Directed by Brandi Bonnin
Choreography by Tony Smith
Music Direction by Robert Lewis
Background
This contract was booked through Kirkwood Music Services, a Houston-area music contracting organization. I have worked as an independent contractor through this company since the beginning of 2022, but my association with Luke Kirkwood goes back a bit farther.
When I was returning from The Days of ‘98 Show with Soapy Smith in Skagway, I reached out to Luke about my availability and he quickly offered me this position. I was excited to get back into music directing with high school students and working on a new, more traditional show.
About the Show
Adapted from the 2003 movie, Elf tells the story of Buddy, a man who believes himself to be an Elf, despite being very different from the other workers at the North Pole. When it becomes clear to him that he’s actually a human child who accidentally ended up there, Buddy sets off to find his real father, who is a children’s book publisher in New York City. Over the course of a few days, he spreads Christmas cheer and finds happiness with his new family.
Elf was originally produced in 2011 on Broadway for a limited run. The score is by Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar. After playing again in the 2012-13 holiday season, the show was heavily revised and has toured for the holidays regularly since then.
